(From the Feb. 12, 1998, issue of the Sequoyah County Times) –A total of 19 horses died in a tragic barn fire at Blue Ribbon Downs in Sallisaw Sunday night.

The heroic efforts of a group of horsemen managed to save the lives of eight of the horses which were stabled in Barn 15.

Nita Jacobs, a trainer, said she had stopped in at the track to check the horses she has in training sometime before 8 p.m. She said as she drove in, she saw that Barn 15 was on fire.

“The smoke was so thick I could hardly see anything. I got four stalls open, but the horses would not come out. They would come to the edge of the doorway and then run back into their stalls. They were so afraid. There was more smoke in the barn aisle than the stalls and they just would not come out,” she said.

She said she kept trying to open additional stalls. She said that, through the smoke, she could faintly see someone at the north end of the aisle also releasing horses.

—The cause of a fire that destroyed a barn at Blue Ribbon Downs in Sallisaw was ruled undetermined by the State Fire Marshall’s office.

The Sallisaw Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire call about the barn fire at the racetrack at 7:46 p.m., and firefighters arrived at the scene at 7:52 p.m.

Mike Tubbs, Sallisaw Fire Department Safety Officer, said the barn was fully involved when firefighters arrived. He said the south end of the barn was already past the peak of the fire.

The State Fire Marshall was called into investigate the fire Monday.

Capt. Sam Pinson, State Fire Marshall’s office, along with Tubbs, spent about three hours Monday morning searching through the rubble for a possible cause of the blaze.

(From the Feb. 13, 1948, issue of the Sequoyah County Times) —From several sources it was learned that Gene Ingle, local agent for the Santa Fe bus lines is contemplating the construction of a modern bus depot in Sallisaw.

Although Your TIMES reporter was unable to contact Mr. Ingle for confirmation of the rumor, it was learned by what he considers reliable sources, that building plans have already been presented to the bus line officials for their approval.

It is reported that Ingle has an option on the vacant lots across the street from the city hall and will build the bus station there.

—Carnall Wheeler, member of the firm of Bassham and Wheeler, architects on the Sequoyah County Memorial hospital, was in Sallisaw Saturday conferring with city manager Fred Johnston in regard to the location of sewer and water lines that will serve the hospital.

Mr. Wheeler stated that his firm had secured approval of the hospital plans from the Dallas district office of the U.S. Public Health Service and that detailed plans would be ready within a short time to present to the Sequoyah County hospital board for their approval In commenting on the plans Mr. Wheeler said that the Sequoyah County hospital, when completed, would be one of the best and most modern 28 bed hospitals in eastern Oklahoma or western Arkansas.

—Joe Simons, owner of the Vian Oklahoma Tire and Supply, associate store, announced this week that he has arranged a back entrance to his store so cars can be driven in for service.

This improvement makes it possible for him to give installation service on seat covers, tire and battery changes and oil service. He is offering his service free on all purchases of these commodities at his store.

(From the Feb. 9, 1923, issue of the Sequoyah County Democrat) —Charles Tecumseh Price, a younger brother of Charlie and George Price, who were killed by being shot to death by citizens of Eureka Springs, Ark., last October, while they were attempting a daylight holdup of a bank in that city, and of Reece Price, who is now serving a twenty-year sentence in the Oklahoma penitentiary for robbing the First National Bank of Muldrow early in last year, confessed to being implicated in the Hulbert Bank robbery, which occurred in January 1922. In his confession to District Judge Jarman, now holding court at Tahlequah, Price said that his two brothers, Charlie and George, both killed in the Eureka Springs daylight holdup, participated in this successful daylight robbery which netted them about three thousand dollars, none of which was ever recovered.

Tump Price recently made a confession of this crime to officers in California, where he has been living a short while, and was brought back to Cherokee County, Oklahoma where the robbery was committed, for sentence. Judge J.H. Jarman, of this city, will pronounce sentence on him tomorrow (Saturday). Tump is the youngest of five brothers. Reese the oldest is in the state penitentiary and Mack, a good citizen and highly regarded citizen resides in this county, where they were all born and reared and of a prominent and well-connected family.

Pitchford, accompanied by Joe Brandon arrived in this city about noon Wednesday over the Kansas City Southern railway, the end of a fourteen days trip to return Joe Brandon, a former barber and candy store merchant of this city, who was apprehended in Portland, Oregon upon the charge of forgery and embezzlement.
