Sallisaw gets solid wins versus Checotah

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds and Lady Diamonds registered wins Tuesday against Checotah by the final scores of 58-48 and 45-26, respectively, in Class 4A matchups at Sallisaw’s Paul Post Fieldhouse.

The Sallisaw Black Diamonds and Lady Diamonds registered wins Tuesday against Checotah by the final scores of 58-48 and 45-26, respectively, in Class 4A matchups at Sallisaw’s Paul Post Fieldhouse.

Leading the offense for the Black Diamonds was Jackson Obregon, who got hot in the final frame to edge teammate Max Stump for top-scorer honors with 13 points to Stump’s 12.

The Lady Diamonds’ offensive leader was Ellie Martin with 12 points, followed by Emily Gregory with 10.

Sallisaw 58, Checotah 48

Sallisaw (9-10) started slowly in the first quarter, trailing Checotah 10-7 at the end of the period, but Sallisaw answered in the second stanza by outpacing Checotah (7-13) to take the lead at 17-15 going into intermission.

After halftime, it was as if both teams kicked into high gear, with each team scoring 15 points for a 32-30 Sallisaw edge to the start of the final frame.

In the last quarter, Obregon came alive and earned all of his 13 points down the stretch to increase the Black Diamonds’ lead to 10 points by the final buzzer.

The Black Diamonds visit eighth-ranked Class 3A Roland tonight for an 8 p.m. tipoff.

Sallisaw 45, Checotah 26

The Lady Diamonds held the Lady Wildcats to a bucket in the first quarter to pull ahead 9-2, then increased their lead to 25-14 by halftime.

After the break, Sallisaw (13-6) widened its lead to 3918 by the end of the third period, before Checotah (512) clawed its way back to the final lopsided score.

The Lady Diamonds travel to 16th-ranked Class 3A Roland today for a 6:30 p.m. game.
