Vian closes week with games at Keys, Howe

Vian’s high school basketball teams closed their week with contests at Keys and Howe on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Vian’s high school basketball teams closed their week with contests at Keys and Howe on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Howe girls 74, Vian 31

Class 2A eighth-ranked Howe (17-5 overall) defeated the Lady Wolverines (5-17) Saturday in LeFlore County.

Scoring for the Lady Wolverines in the game were Avery Wright (9 points), Halli Russell (7), Rayleigh Terrill (5), Maci Smith and Rebel Simon (4 each) and Kalli Kennedy (2).

Vian boys 46, Howe 35 The Wolverines (11-9 overall) outscored the host Lions (6-16) 19-8 in the third quarter Saturday as Vian went on to register the Big 8 Conference win.

The score was tied 21all at the half before Vian went in front for good in the third period.

Providing Vian’s points in the contest were Masyn Wright (12 points), K’den Richardson (11), Desean Mays and Yonsi Grass (7 each), Diego Ramos (5) and Trace Sanders and Michael Polecat (2 apiece).

Keys girls 59, Vian 43

The Lady Wolverines (516 overall) trailed the Lady Cougars (7-12) 27-19 at the half Friday in Cherokee County but Keys pulled away (18-3) in the third period to record the Big 8 Conference victory. Scoring for Vian in the game were Rebel Simon (15 points), Maci Smith (9), Avery Wright (7), Halli Russell (6), Annie Neal (3), Jaden Frazier (2) and Kala Gibbins (1). Simon also collected seven rebounds in the contest.

Keys boys 40, Vian 35

Vian’s Yonsi Grass and Diego Ramos scored a combined 25 points at Keys Friday night but the Class 3A No. 13 Cougars (10-9 overall) held on for the Big 8 Conference win over Vian (10-9).

The Cougars led 12-7 after the first eight minutes and 2013 at the intermission after adding two points (8-6) to their advantage in the second stanza.

After being outscored 13-6 in the third period the Wolverines trimmed nine points (16-7) off the deficit in the fourth frame.

Grass (game-high 15 points) and Ramos (10) were Vian’s top scorers in the game and also recording points for the Wolverines were Desean Mays (8) and Masyn Wright (2).
