The Vian Board of Trustees met on Jan. 17 for its monthly meeting where matters at Armstrong Park was the topic of discussion. The board also accepted the resignation of one police officer and offered employment to another officer as a replacement.

The trustees first held a discussion on the asphalt for a parking lot, located inside Armstrong Park. According to meeting minutes, there is money left on an existing grant that the town inherited when they purchased the park.

Vice mayor Rick Peoples and Town Administrator Keith Boshers said they walked the trails with a contractor who reportedly bid $73,000 to repair and seal the trails and parking lot.

“We will use the leftover grant money and have asked the Vian Community Trust to pay the rest of the cost,” Boshers said.

Suzanne Sullivan addressed the trustees concerning the amphitheater at the park, along with various park projects. Sullivan said she would also take the cost request to the Trust board.

In other business, the board approved the amended audit engagement letter from Robert St. Pierre, CPA, PC, dated Dec. 29, 2022, and all town reports as presented for the previous month.

A right-of-way easement was given a green light to the Sequoyah County Water Association due to a water line that runs through the corner of the park.

The trustees also accepted the resignation of police officer Joshua Cummings and made an offer of employment to Lawrence Milligan as his replacement.

Regarding the Vian Volunteer Fire Department, the board approved the appointment of David K. Donaldson and Zachary Vickers as firefighters to the department.
