A total of eight students who reportedly attend Webbers Falls Public School were transported to an area hospital last week after they unintentionally overdosed on an unknown substance, according to school personnel.
Superintendent Chris Whelan posted to the school’s social media page last Tuesday, originally stating that two students were transported after allegedly taking an unknown substance.
Whelan said school staff immediately responded by rendering first aid and calling 9-1-1 for medical assistance from several agencies in the area. He said the students were transferred from campus to a Muskogee hospital for further evaluation, but they were reported as coherent and responsive.
Whelan later reported in addition to the two students, five more were transported for precautionary reasons but Muskogee County Emergency Management reported a total of eight students were transported, and a ninth one reportedly declined to be transported.
Webbers Falls Police Chief Wayne Cartwright said the students were believed to be using a THC vape pen laced with an opioid. He said the vape pen and substance have been sent to the state crime lab for further analysis and they are investigating leads as to where the substances may have originated from.
All the students have reportedly been released from the hospital but the individual status of each student was unknown as of press time.
Whelan said outside counseling services were on site for students and staff following the incident.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with law enforcement to make sure this situation is investigated,” Whelan said. “Please keep these students and our school in your prayers.”
