Members learn steps for healthier eating

By Billie Anthony

Today six members and one new member weighed in. Doris had our best weight loss for the week with 1.8 pounds. Great job, Doris! Three members sign our Loser Lotto chart. The Two Bit Bowl name drawn was Neve so she received the quarters for her weight loss. Our challenge from last week was to bring one or two jokes for the members to laugh and feel good. We had a fun time with each joke. We want to welcome Jeri to our chapter. We are looking forwards to helping Jeri reach her goal.

Another cannonball was handed out for the members to add to their notebooks. The program “5 Steps for eating Healthier,” let us know that changing the way you eat improve your health. It can lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, and help you stay at a healthy weight. Just watch your calories and follow these five steps: 1. Eat fewer unhealthy fats by choosing more fish and lean meats, skip butter and lard, pass on foods that have palm, coconut, or partially hydrogenated oils, eat fewer high fat dairy foods like cheese, ice cream, and whole milk; 2. Go light on salt. Keep the saltshaker off the table, limit high salt ingredients such as soy sauce, bouillon and garlic salt. Limit convenience foods and read food labels; 3. Limit sugar and cut the sugar in recipes by 1/3 or 1/2; 4. Eat more fiber such as fresh fruits and vegetables every day, boost your diet with whole grains, add beans and lentils to your meals and drink more water to match your fiber intake; 5. Pay attention to serving sizes.

Next week will be our chapter fun day. We will be showing how to crochet, have a fun quiz on a variety of subjects and if we have time Billie will show the members how to play the card game ‘Seven.’

EVERYONE is invited to visit. The first visit is FREE. It cost $49 a year to join TOPS Club INC. We meet at First Christian Church, 706 N Wheeler, Sallisaw, Monday at 10:30am-12pm. We begin weighing at 10:30am and the meeting starts at 11am and ends at 12. For more info, please call Billie at 918-4131383. We look forward to meeting you.
