Drug Court detainee escapes custody

By Amie Cato-Remer Editor

A local woman has been charged in Sequoyah County District Court after being detained at Drug Court and then fleeing on foot prior to being processed into the Sequoyah County Detention Center.

A local woman has been charged in Sequoyah County District Court after being detained at Drug Court and then fleeing on foot prior to being processed into the Sequoyah County Detention Center.

Leeann Brewer, 35, who has addresses in both Sallisaw and Muldrow, was charged on Feb. 15 with escape from arrest or detention and third-degree burglary. She received a $25,000 bond and is now scheduled to appear before Associate District Judge Kyle Waters for an April 5 felony disposition docket.

Sallisaw Police Officer Rebecca Greer reported on Feb. 7 she was informed police were looking for Brewer after she escaped custody from Drug Court while in the sally port of the Sequoyah County Detention Center.

Officer Sonny Jason said the Drug Court coordinator told him Judge Dennis Sprouse had ordered Brewer into custody after she reportedly violated her rules and conditions. The Drug Court coordinator was taking Brewer to the courthouse to be processed when Brewer grabbed her car keys from the coordinator’s dash and then fled on foot from the courthouse.

Greer was patrolling the area of Creek and Cedar streets when she saw a female matching Brewer’s description and yelled for her to stop. But she took off running behind a building on Delaware and Cedar streets, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Greer went after Brewer on foot, but reportedly lost sight of her. The officer then noticed a van with a door not completely shut and opened it, telling Brewer to come out if she was inside. Brewer was reportedly found hiding in a cubby inside the van and taken into custody.

She was transported to the Sallisaw Police Department where she was booked on her charges and later transported back to the Sequoyah County Detention Center.

District Attorney Jack Thorp said both charges are felonies. If found guilty of the escape charge, it is punishable by up to one year imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $500 or up to two years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $1,000; the third-degree burglary charge is punishable by imprisonment for up to five years.
