Sallee accused of theft of deceased father’s guns
A Sallisaw man is facing felony charges of grand larceny and possession of a firearm following former felony conviction after he allegedly took items, including three firearms, belonging to his deceased father.
Jeremiah D. Sallee, 34, was charged Feb. 3 in Sequoyah County District Court, and received a $13,000 bond. Following a scheduled arraignment on Feb. 8, Sallee reportedly failed to appear and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest the following day, according to court records.
Sallisaw Police Officer Jeff Craghead reported on Jan. 23 he and officer Jarett Cannon were dispatched to Richardson Street in response to a theft, where they met with the reporting party. The reporting party told the officers that at around 2 a.m., she went into the deceased man’s bedroom and found the window partially open. The reporting party said the window screen had been cut, and there were three metal containers outside the window containing various items belonging to the deceased man. The reporting party said she also noticed three firearms were missing from the bedroom, according to the probable cause affidavit.
The reporting party said the man had passed away the day before, and she’d notified family members, which included his son, Sallee. She said when Sallee arrived, he went into his late father’s room and shut the door. The reporting party said Sallee tried on some his father’s clothing and stated he wanted them, and gave the reporting party a debit card belonging to his late father.
The reporting party said in the affidavit she’d removed a pistol from the bedroom prior to Sallee’s arrival, but there were three other firearms inside. The reporting party went on to say Sallee had paced back and forth between the living room and bedroom while he was at the home, and then reportedly went outside a few times, going back into the bedroom each time he came inside. He reportedly left the residence with a female about an hour later.
The next day, Sallee went back to visit with family members, where he was arrested on unrelated warrants from both Cherokee and Sequoyah counties.
The female told police they went to the residence together, but she never went into the bedroom with Sallee. She stated Sallee loaded some guns into her vehicle, and he told her they’d been given to him, according to the affidavit. She told authorities where the guns were hidden inside her bedroom at a Vian residence, and gave them consent to retrieve them. Police also reported finding two fixedblade knives at the Vian residence.
Sallee was transported to the Sallisaw Police Department where he told police he thought the reporting party was trying to “take everything that belonged to his father,” so he took the guns with the intent to give them to a family member. He said two of the guns were actually his, and admitted to cutting the window screen and lowering the guns outside the window, according to the affidavit.
District Attorney Jack Thorp said if found guilty of grand larceny, the crime is punishable by imprisonment in the state penitentiary for a term of not more than two years, or in the county jail not to exceed one year, a fine not to exceed $1,000, or by both fine and imprisonment, and restitution. Possession of a firearm after former felony conviction is punishable by imprisonment for one to 10 years.
