A Roland man is scheduled to appear today before Associate District Judge Kyle Waters on charges of possession of a firearm after former felony conviction, possession of controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia following a January traffic stop.
Bobby L. Woods, 44, was formally charged on Jan. 24 in Sequoyah County District Court and received a $15,000 bond. Roland Police Officer Justin Deuley reported at 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 17 he noticed a Chevrolet Impala with defective tail lights and initiated a traffic stop on Carson Road and Shade Lane.
Deuley said he asked for Woods’ license, registration and proof of insurance but Woods told him he had not yet registered the vehicle. He said he’d purchased the car from an elderly family member and would have to wait until they were better so they could go to the tag office.
While Woods was searching for his insurance in the center console, the officer reported noticing a prescription pill bottle and asked Woods if it belonged to him. Woods alleged he had given someone a ride and they’d forgotten the pill bottle in his car, according to the probable cause affidavit. The pills reportedly belonged to another individual and the prescription showed it was filled in August 2022.
Woods was detained at that time and told Deuley he did not have insurance on the vehicle, according to the affidavit. Deuley’s passenger, Christopher Cooper, was also detained and a search was conducted of the vehicle.
Police reported finding a package of insulin syringes and an air gun with no orange markings to distinguish it from an actual firearm. Also reported found were two containers with THC markings with green leafy residue, and a loaded syringe containing a clear liquid that Woods said contained either methamphetamine or pills. Two more syringes were reportedly located in the trunk.
Cooper was released and allowed to walk to his residence while Woods was taken to the Roland Police Department. Woods was found to have three former felony charges in Sequoyah County within the last 10 years and felony convictions in Arkansas for drug-related offenses. He was then transported to the Sequoyah County Detention Center where he was booked in on his charges.
