A Few of My Favorite Things
Soothing Soup
March 3 is National Soup It Forward Day! I know, I know. That’s stretching it a little, right? Well, I needed an idea and when it’s food related, I am usually pretty willing to go with it. The weather was cool enough a couple days this week I was able to cook all four in a couple days and get it done before it warmed up too much. This day encourages us to deliver love and spread kindness one bowl at a time. And since I made four pots, it wasn’t too hard to share!

Take the time out to share a bowl or maybe a whole pot with family, friends, neighbors or coworkers. This is about reaching out. In a time in history where we can barely bring ourselves out of our electronics to even have a meal together, this is a nice way to say you care. Homemade soup is also believed to have healing properties depending on what goes in it. As long as it’s made with love, you can’t go wrong!
Fun Facts: There are several soup related days we celebrate. February 4th is National Homemade Soup Day, National Turkey Neck Soup Day is March 30, December 29th is National Pepper Pot Soup Day and December 6th is National Gazpacho (cold soup, typically vegetable) Day just to name a few!
According to Guinness World Records, DENK Communicatie from the Netherlands prepared a 7,042 gallon vegetable soup in Poeldijk, Netherlands, on May 16, 2009. The ingredients included 4,623 gallons of water, 16,402lbs. of tomatoes, 2,755lbs. of cucumbers, 992lbs. of bell peppers, 7lbs. of parsley, 2,503 pieces of garlic, 275lbs. tomato paste, 7.16lbs. of salt, 7lbs. of pepper, 12.68 gallons of olive oil and 22.58oz of basil cress. I am glad I didn’t have to chop all those vegetables! There are other records relating to soup including juggling cans of soup in a cascading pattern, fastest time alphabetizing letters in a can of alphabet soup and tallest soup can tower balanced on a forehead.
Did you know? The pop culture catchphrase “No soup for you!” is used as a response to someone’s request or demand that will not be fulfilled. It originated from a 1995 episode of the TV show “Seinfeld.”
Friday and Saturday may be the best chance for soup this weekend. I am not likely to heat the house up for a soup when the temps are in the 70s. This weekend, check your ingredients and make your grocery list, picking up some to go containers. Meet me in the kitchen for some easy soups! Then get out and share what you make!
