Pigeon celebrates 25 years of Card Ministry

By Amie Cato-Remer Editor

Ruby Pigeon of Vian said it's hard to believe that 2023 marks 25 years since she first started Miss Ruby's Card Ministry.

Ruby Pigeon of Vian said it’s hard to believe that 2023 marks 25 years since she first started Miss Ruby’s Card Ministry.

“I’ve been sending cards to people for 25 years who have become like family to me,” Pigeon said. “It has been a blessing. I’ve had people tell me that some days that card made all the difference to them.”

Pigeon said handwritten cards may seem oldfashioned to some but she feels what she’s doing is necessary.

“To me, everyone I write to is one of God’s children,” she said. “There are some in prison who want all of their cards done in pencil, that’s a way for them to be able to send them on to their families.”

Pigeon said she also sends cards to those battling cancer or residents in nursing homes.

“I was talking with Annette Crowder at Vian Nursing & Rehab recently, and she told me there are some residents at the nursing home who would love to get cards,” she said. “So if anyone would like to have a pen pal, just call Annette at 918-773-5258 and she will give you their names.”

Pigeon said some of the people she sends cards to write her or mail her a card back, telling her how much of a blessing it is.

One woman wrote, “Next month will be five years of you encouraging me and praying for me and family. You are such a special part of my recovery and I love you so much!”

Another wrote to Pigeon, referring to her as her adoptive daughter.

“I want to thank you for the time, effort and good deeds for your God, and the help you give to others. There are peoples’ lives you touch through the cards you have been sending out all these years. God has always loved a cheerful giver. It means a lot to me to have a sister in Christ, a good and true friend, and a person I can depend on. May God continue with you as you press on with your good work and may He always be with you. Pray in the morning, noontime and in the evening; pray all the time. Ruby is a very special person and I love her dearly. Now and always.”

Another wrote, “I want to thank you for all the cards you have sent me. They are uplifting and thoughtful. They sure have helped me through some tough times. I thank you for thinking of me.”

An inmate in Texas wrote, “I just want you to know you are a great gift from our Lord Jesus. You’ve made my days in a very dark place a brighter light. I’m grateful to know someone is praying for me, especially not having any family support. I’ve thanked the Lord for you many times. A lot of times, your mail is the only mail I get. Thank you for serving the Lord because He is the One who put you in my life.”

A woman in Norman wrote, “I’ve received cards from Miss Ruby for several years. Her cards have inspired me by their beautiful bible verses, and kind and uplifting words. She has truly been a blessing to me and is an outstanding lady with an outstanding, large heart!”

“As long as I can, I will be sending my cards,” Pigeon said. “I send a small written message to each one, “Keep working for the Lord, the pay isn’t much but the retirement plan is out of this world.” God bless you, because he has already blessed me. Please help make someone’s day!”

Anyone wishing to donate cards or stamps to Miss Ruby’s Card Ministry can do so by dropping them off at the Vian Tenkiller News office, 603 W. Schley.
