2023 Sexual Assault Awareness Month events

Sexual Assault Awareness Proclamation–April 3, 10 a.m.

Sexual Assault Awareness Proclamation – April 3, 10 a.m.

The Sequoyah County Coordinated Community Response/Sexual Assault Response Team (Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Response Team) will present a proclamation asking the commissioners to declare April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Everyone is welcome to come to the meeting and show your support for sexual assault victims/survivors. Location: Sequoyah County Commissioners meeting, 117 S. Oak St., Suite 112, Sallisaw.

Sexual Assault Awareness Glow Stick Walk – April 3, 7:30 p.m.

The Sequoyah County Coordinated Community Response/Sexual Assault Response Team will host a Glow Stick Walk in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The walk will begin at the pavilion on the east lawn of the Sequoyah County Courthouse and will cover about six blocks and will end at back, at the pavilion. This is a way to make the community aware that sexual assault does occur and to provide support for the victims/survivors of this life changing crime. So put on your teal (if you have it, if not, come anyway), come out, find out the facts about the crime of sexual assault, take a walk, enjoy the company of others and show your support. Location-Sequoyah County Courthouse Pavilion, east lawn of the courthouse. *Glow sticks will be provided.

Sexual Assault Awareness Paint the Town Teal Event – April 10, 5 to 7 p.m.

Members of the Sequoyah County Coordinated Community Response/Sexual Assault Response Team will be Painting the Town Teal, April 10 to 14. To kick this event off, on the evening of April 10, from 5 to 7 p.m., members will be set up to window chalk your car window(s) with a teal-colored chalk ribbon, Sexual Assault Awareness logos, provide info about Sexual Assault Awareness Month and their team, and will also have resource materials available for victims/survivors of sexual assault. Please come by and support the victims/survivors of sexual assault. Be a part of letting it be known, Sexual Assault will not be tolerated in Sequoyah County! Location-Parking area on E. Cherokee across from Maria’s Restaurant.

Get to know the Team – April 17, 19 and 21

The Sequoyah County Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Response Team (CCR/SART) will highlight one of their team members on their Facebook page on each of these days. The community will be able to meet team members and find out a little about what they do and why. The interviews will be conducted by the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office Victim’s Resource Specialist, Sarah Ridinger. Sarah will be talking with team members, who have individual roles within the team and to explore why they chose to become a team member of the Sequoyah County CCR/SART. Denim Day – April 26

The Sequoyah County Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Response Team (CCR/SART) will join everyone worldwide on Denim Day! We will proudly wear jeans in support of sexual assault victims/survivors. On April 26, wear your jeans and take photos of you and your friends, co-workers or your family, and send them to us! We will gladly post them on our Facebook page to show victims/survivors are not alone! Sexual Assault Awareness is important for everyone. If you don’t know and are interested in what Denim Day is based on, check out our Facebook page beginning April 1, where we will share what sparked the Denim Day fire! Location-Worldwide.

Sequoyah County Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Response Team CCR/SART The Great American Clean Up Event

On Saturday, April 29, from 10 am-12 pm, the Sequoyah County Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Response Team will join in on The Great American Clean Up! Keep Oklahoma Beautiful has provided us with trash bags, protective gloves, orange vests, a banner and bottles of water for the event. The area of cleanup will be approximately a one mile stretch with the location of the cleanup to be announced on our team Facebook page on April 1, 2023. If you would like to join us, please do so! There are so many ways we can make a difference in our communities and this is one of them. As with every problem, personal investment is the first step to a permanent solution. Come on out and join us. Everyone is welcome!
