No. 7 Wolverines sweep home twinbill

Class 2A seventh-ranked Vian swept a doubleheader at home Monday against Morris and Stilwell.

Class 2A seventh-ranked Vian swept a doubleheader at home Monday against Morris and Stilwell.

The Wolverines shut out Morris 15-0 in the first game, before topping Stilwell 12-4.

The Wolverines overcame a shaky start by scoring four runs apiece in the third and fourth innings Monday as Vian improved to 10-1 for the season with the win over the Indians.

Stilwell registered four runs in the top of the first before the Wolverines responded with two in the bottom of the frame.

In the bottom of the third Vian scored four runs and two of them came on RBI singles by Destry Bethel and Riley Ellis.

Bethel, Ellis and Michael Polecat drove in runs in Vian’s four-run fourth.

Two Vian runs in the bottom of the sixth ended the contest.

The Wolverines registered 13 hits in the game. Connor Collins, Draighton Fletcher, Bethel, Ellis and Polecat each collected multiple hits and Fletcher and Collins recorded three hits apiece. Cash Collins also had a hit and Fletcher stole five bases.

Ellis (6.0 innings) struck out nine and walked three while allowing five hits and four earned runs on the mound.

Neither team committed an error in the game.

Vian 15, Morris 0

Destry Bethel tossed a five-hit shutout and the Wolverines scored a combined eight runs in the first two innings as Vian shut out the Eagles in the Wolverines’ first game Monday.

Vian scored five runs in the opening frame before adding three, two and five runs, respectively, in the next three innings of the run-rule game.

Brandon Redburn of Vian went 4-for-4 at the plate with a single and a double in the first, a single in the third and a single in the fourth.

In Vian’s four-run fourth Redburn, Bethel and Connor Collins all drove in runs.

The Wolverines totaled 14 runs in the contest and Redburn, Connor Collins, Cash Collins and Bethel each had multiple hits and Diego Ramos, Riley Ellis, Michael Polecat and Kaden Fulbright had a hit apiece.

Bethel (5.0 innings) struck out two and walked two in the contest.

Morris committed five errors in the game and Vian had none.
