Wolverines’ win streak halted in festival finale

By LYNN ADAMS WRITER

Vian was on a baseball roll … until it wasn’t.

The Wolverines had pieced together three wins in three days heading into the final game of Saturday’s Vian Festival, but seventh-ranked Vian got everything they could handle and more with Class 2A No. 2 Oktaha.

But the Wolverines bounced back with a win at Porter on Monday.

Vian 12, Porter 4

Draighton Fletcher and Michael Polecat had three hits apiece and Fletcher, Connor Collins and Diego Ramos recorded three RBIs each to power the Wolverines past Porter.

After a scoreless first inning, Vian churned out seven runs in the second stanza and five more in the third inning to build a lead the Pirates could not overcome. Porter managed two runs in the third and a single run in the second and fifth frames.

Kaden Fulbright pitched three innings and Riley Ellis handled the other two innings from the mound to record the victory. Ellis had four strikeouts, while Fulbright collected two.

Porter committed two errors for the game and Vian had one.

Oktaha 11, Vian 1

The Wolverines staked themselves to an early 1-0 lead with a tally in the bottom of the first inning Saturday evening but things went downhill from there.

Vian collected four hits for the game but couldn’t push across additional runs. Meanwhile, the Tigers went on a scoring spree in the middle and late innings to end any Wolverine expectations to keep their winning streak alive.

Oktaha scored four runs in the top of the fourth frame and then added seven more in the sixth stanza to seal the win. The Tigers scattered 11 hits in the game.

Oktaha was charged with two errors for the game, while Vian had a lone miscue.

Other teams in the Vian Festival included Central, Hulbert and Stigler.

Vian 12, Stigler 0

Cash Collins and Lynden Manning each had three RBIs and Destry Bethel added another as the Wolverines rolled to the 12-0 whitewash of the Panthers in the opening game of the Vian Festival.

Bethel paced Vian with two hits, while Diego Ramos took care of business on the mound, registering 10 strikeouts in five innings of work.

The Wolverines got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the opening inning, then added insurance runs with six in the third stanza and four in the fourth frame.

Vian collected nine hits for the game while limiting Stigler to two. The Panthers committed two errors and Vian had a single miscue.

Vian 13, Roland 6

The Wolverines overcame an early 5-0 deficit to the Rangers in the first inning to knot the game in the top of the second stanza Friday at Roland. From there, it was all Vian with three runs in the third inning, four in the fifth frame and a final tally in the sixth. Roland, meanwhile, added its final run in the third inning.

Vian collected 12 hits on the day, led by Riley Ellis with three and Draighton Fletcher and Cash Collins each with two. Fletcher and Diego Ramos each registered three RBIs to pace the Wolverines.

Roland’s Ashton Peters, Konner Lewis and Trenton Ross each had a hit in the contest and registering an RBI apiece for the Rangers were Desean Cruse, Paden Pitts, Ashton and Colton Peters, Avery Moya and Ross.

Destry Bethel collected nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings on the mound for the win. Pitts (2.0 innings) struck out two and walked three while allowing five hits and six earned runs for the Rangers.

Vian committed two errors on the day, while Roland had one miscue.

Vian 7, Eufaula 4

Draighton Fletcher led all hitters with three while Cash Collins and Brandon Redburn added two apiece as the Wolverines held off the host Ironheads on Thursday afternoon.

Collins paced Vian with three RBIs and Redburn added two of his own as the Wolverines amassed 11 hits while limiting Eufaula to five.

The Wolverines posted a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then had a 3-0 edge by the third inning before Eufaula trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning. Vian added three runs in the top of the fourth frame, but the Ironheads countered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Wolverines added the game’s final run in the fifth frame.

Redburn and Kaden Fulbright divvied up the pitching duties to turn back the Eufaula effort. Redburn collected three strikeouts in 3.2 innings while Fulbright registered four strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Eufaula committed three miscues on the day while Vian had a lone error.
