Members learn ‘Grocery Cart Smarts’

By Billie Anthony

We had eight ladies weigh in today. Billie had the best weight loss for the week with 4.8 pounds. I have had a bad cold this week, so haven’t been hungry. Our chapter had a net loss of .7 pounds. The Two Bit Bowl name drawn was Neve. This week’s challenge is to create a weekly menu.

Our weekly contest was titled “Lucky 13”. Maybe it was luck that brought you to TOPS, or maybe you just feel lucky being here! In either case, here’s a fun way to increase your chances of reaching the weight-loss goal you set at the beginning of the year. The three principles of TOPS: eat better, move more and show support. This contest activity from each of the three categories could produce 13 points for whoever could win the special prize. Mary had the most points. Congrats, Mary!

Our program today was “Grocery Cart Smarts.” Let’s all admit it… sometimes shopping for groceries — whether it’s just for ourselves for a whole family — can be a real chore. There are so many different products to choose from, and there’s so much to keep in mind. Is this food healthy? Am I limiting my sugar, salt, and fat intake? How will I make my budget dollars stretch far enough that I can buy what I need, along with a few things I really want? Who here is in a “shopping-rut” — that is, you buy the same products week after week out of habit, or because of convenience, or because you have a system or lifestyle that doesn’t really encourage you to try new things? Who wishes you could find a better, easier way to shop for groceries? Making sensible food selections is a matter of being well informed and asking the right questions. It’s not about giving into impulses that might satisfy us for the moment. It requires being clear about our goals and conscious of the choices we make to achieve those goals — like having a piece of fruit instead of a glazed doughnut. We can enjoy foods we love in moderation, knowing that a nutritious diet is a varied one. Plan ahead and shop smartly!

We closed our meeting with the TOPS Pledge.

EVERYONE is invited to visit. The first visit is FREE. It cost $49 a year to join TOPS Club INC. We meet at First Christian Church, 706 N Wheeler, Sallisaw, Monday at 10:30 a.m.-noon. We begin weighing at 10:30am and the meeting starts at 11 a.m. and ends at noon. For more info, please call Billie at 918/413-1383. We look forward to meeting you.
