Sallisaw honors Teachers of the Year

The Sallisaw School Board and administration honored their 2023 Teachers of the Year and the District Teacher of the Year as well as conducting other regular business at Monday’s meeting.

The Sallisaw School Board and administration honored their 2023 Teachers of the Year and the District Teacher of the Year as well as conducting other regular business at Monday’s meeting.

Suzette Frazier, Sallisaw Middle School teacher, is the District’s 2023 Teacher of the Year. She is also the Teacher of the Year for the middle school. Other Teachers of the Year representing the three other schools are Ryan Barrett (Liberty), Melissa Massengale (Eastside), and Susan Barger (high school).

Assistant Superintendent Steve Barrett presented all teachers with certificates.

Chairman of the Board Tami Martin took her Oath of Office after retaining her seat.

Board members rotated their seats as follows: Amanda Trudeau Hatcher-Seat 4 (president), Justin McGrew-Seat 5 (vice-president), Bobby Qualls-Seat 1 (clerk), Frank Sullivan III-Seat 2 (deputy clerk), and Martin-Seat 3 (member).

Superintendent Randy Wood announced the following: Board training at ICTC on April 17 beginning at 5:30 p.m.; Prom, April 15, 8 to 11 p.m.; and the annual Senior Tea at 1 p.m. May 4 at the Overstreet Mansion.

All reports and minutes were approved.

Resignations submitted by Shannon Bair (Middle School Science), Thesa Loving (Middle School Choir/Art), Kayla Rawlings (Middle School Cafeteria) Christine White (High School Paraprofessional), Paul Skinner, Rachael McElhaney, Jessica Gipson, Janis Gentile and Riley Thurber were all approved by the board.

The District Transfer Capacity for the fourth quarter was approved along with temporary appropriations for the 2023-24 school year.

Other items approved included facility use requests for the Health and Wellness Center Adventure Headstart requesting to use the Middle School Cafeteria from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on May 25.

Following executive session, the board approved the employment of Brad Jackson as the assistant superintendent for the 2023-24 school year; Micah Lovejoy as a high school counselor on a temporary contract for the 2023-24 school year; and Brandon Richardson as the high school assistant football coach, also on a temporary contract for the 2023-24 school year.

The board also approved board members: Justin McGrew, Tami Martin and Frank Sullivan to the negotiating team to negotiate the 2023-24 contracts with certified staff.
