Regional loss to Shattuck ends Pirates’ season

By Lea Lessley Sports Writer

Gore went 1-2 in its Class A regional tournament at Laverne last week and a loss to ninth-ranked Shattuck on Friday ended the Pirates’ season.

Gore went 1-2 in its Class A regional tournament at Laverne last week and a loss to ninth-ranked Shattuck on Friday ended the Pirates’ season.

The Pirates (20-10 overall) started regional play Thursday with a 7-6 loss to Shattuck in eight innings but Gore rebounded to beat Barnsdall 10-4.

Gore head coach Tyler Lewis was proud of his team’s season.

“I was proud of my kids for doing what they had to do to get there,” Lewis said. “Making it to regionals isn’t easy. We were competitive. I think we went and did things with pride and dignity. I think we could have played a little bit better but in big games things happen and it’s about how you rebound and I think we rebounded pretty well, we just played some really good teams out there.”

Shattuck 7, Gore 6 (8) (Game 1, Thursday) “In our first game we played Shattuck,” Lewis said. “They’re No. 9 in class A. Gunner Dozier (4.1 innings) started and Mike McAlister (3.2) came in and closed the game. We ended up going into extra innings in that one. We did everything to win that one and just came up a run short by a run.

“Hunter McGee and Ben Kirkpatrick were 3 for 4 at the plate and Dayne Perryman and Gabe Dozier were 1 for 3. Dayne had a double.”

Gore 10, Barnsdall 4 (Game 2, Thursday) “Against Barnsdall, Ben Kirkpatrick (5.2 innings) started the game and Mike McAlester (1.1) came in and closed,” Lewis said. “Tyler Lane was 4 for 4, Blane Barnes was 2 for 3, Dayne Perryman was 3 for 5 and Hunter McGee was 2 for 4. Hunter McGee had a double in that one.”

Shattuck 13, Gore 0 (Game 3, Friday) “That one didn’t go so well,” Lewis remarked. “We just kind of ran into a wall with pitching. Dayne (2.1 innings) threw well. That second day is a tough day and Shattuck hit the ball very, very well that day and made it tough on us.

“Tyler Lane was 1 for 2, Ben Kirkpatrick was 2 for 3 and Gunner Dozier and Hunter McGee were 1 for 3. Dayne threw 2.1 and then Blane Barnes threw 1.2. It only went five (innings).”
