Troopers confiscate over 4,000 pounds of marijuana

A New York truck driver has been charged with a felony count of aggravated trafficking in illegal drugs (marijuana) after he was found to be in possession of over 4,000 pounds of marijuana.

Li Yun, 43, of Flushing, was charged April 19 in Sequoyah County District Court and if found guilty, could face imprisonment for 10 years to life. He received a $35,000 bond and is now scheduled for a June 7 felony disposition docket.

Oklahoma Highway Patrolman Caleb Cole reported at 1:47 a.m. he was eastbound on I-40 near mile marker 308 when he came upon a slower moving semi in the outside lane.

The trooper said the semi went over the center line numerous times and he activated his camera, recording the semi as he followed it. The driver reportedly drove over the center line two more times and across the fog line onto the shoulder, according to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case, before the trooper initiated a traffic stop near the 311 mile marker.

The driver, Yun, presented his drivers license and a folder of documentation and then went back to the trooper’s patrol unit for enforcement checks. Yun appeared nervous and told the trooper he was driving from Oklahoma City to New York.

Trooper Daran Koch arrived and deployed his K9 Josey, who conducted a free air sniff of the semi and trailer while Cole ran the driver’s license for warrant checks. The K9 reportedly alerted to the semi’s trailer and the driver was secured.

There was a cut combination lock on the trailer and Yun said he didn’t know the combination. After the trailer was opened, 17 large pallets of boxes were revealed, along with an overwhelming odor of raw marijuana.

Fifteen of the 17 pallets reportedly contained 12 large boxes, and the other two held eight boxes each, totaling 196 boxes. When the troopers opened them, they found each box to contain 22 to 25 vacuum sealed bundles each. The troopers estimated there was about 4,300 pounds of suspected marijuana total.

Yun was taken to the Sequoyah County Detention Center where he was booked in on his charge and the tractor trailer was transported to Troop C Headquarters in Muskogee for storage and then to Oklahoma City by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics.
