Over 50 dogs rescued from county residence

Numerous dogs, puppies and a single cat were all rescued Monday from a residence in Sequoyah County after it was reported the animals were being hoarded on the property.

According to the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals (OAA) Facebook page, the organization was contacted by the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s office to assist with the situation due to the number of animals found at the residence.

OAA said they agreed to help because there are very few resources for help in our area, like most others in the state.

Reports state an elderly individual allegedly suffering from dementia had over 50 dogs on the property, and didn’t want to give up the animals.

The animals appeared to have lived in deplorable conditions all their lives with no veterinarian care, but were reported to have good body weight. Because none of the animals were spayed or neu- tered, they kept reproducing, only adding to the numbers.

OAA reached out to TULSA SPCA, who agreed to help by taking in some of the dogs. The Tulsa organization reportedly brought back 39 dogs, which included two mother dogs and several puppies, and one cat, while OAA brought a total of 18 dogs back on Monday.

Those rescuing the animals reported most of the dogs were so terrified they had to be trapped.

“There are still over 30 dogs left to rescue. OAA will be going back to make sure they are all removed off the property and get the medical attention they need. They will all be assessed and eventually transferred to other rescue partners, adopted, or sent on transports to out of state rescue partners,” their Facebook post read.

As of midday May 19, $961 had been raised by the non-profit organization.
