Walter Davis

By Lynn McCulley Staff Writer

At the age of 40 and being a single dad of six, Walter Davis of Sallisaw has the ideal business going for him doing something he enjoys and still gets to spend time with his children.

At the age of 40 and being a single dad of six, Walter Davis of Sallisaw has the ideal business going for him doing something he enjoys and still gets to spend time with his children.

As the owner of JP’s Burger Shack, Davis said he has the help of his 13-year-old daughter to help him when he gets busy.

“We’re located at the Sallisaw Food Court and our hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday,” he said.

The Burger Shack includes, of course, juicy burgers which he boasts are the best in town. There is also fried and grilled chicken for those who may prefer chicken instead of beef.

“I spent many years helping my mom, Sandy,” Davis said. His mother worked as a physician’s liaison and cooked for many health professionals which accompanied her job.

“She didn’t have a catering business, she just enjoyed cooking and when there were events they asked her to help with, she didn’t believe in ordering the food. She prepared it herself,” he said. “She still comes in to help me at times.”

A 2002 graduate of Sallisaw High School, Davis said he has always lived in the same town.

“I enjoy living here because I know everyone,” he said.

“I’ve worked at Charlie’s Chicken also and I got to know a lot of people there and learned a lot from working there, too,” he said.

Davis has six children who range from ages six to 19.

“I only have three at home,” he said. “One of my daughters helps me out with cooking and waiting on customers. She gets to earn her own money for her own spending and she likes that.”

“I’ve always enjoyed cooking. Guess that’s why when when the opportunity came up for me to open my own business, I took it. I’ve always wanted to own a restaurant and I figured this would be a good start,” he said.

Davis said owning his own business provides him weekends off in which he gets to spend time with his children.

“We enjoy the outdoors. I like to fish, hunt and just anything I can do outdoors. We spend a lot of time at the creek,” he said.

Davis smiled when he said he wasn’t sure why he thinks his burgers are the best in town.

“Guess you can say I love to cook so they’re made with more love,” he said, smiling.
