When Misty Osborn took a job at Walmart in Sallisaw 10 years ago, she never knew what a delight it would be working at the “cake counter.”
Osborn, 37, of Vian, said making cakes for her customers has become one of her favorite things to do.
“I absolutely love my job,” Osborn said. “I love getting to be creative in my work. Bringing a smile to the customer’s face when they see their cake, and it’s everything they wanted and/or ordered is the best feeling. It can really be rewarding.”
Osborn said she does everything from basic sheet cakes to tiered wedding cakes at the Walmart bakery.
“I can pretty much do anything with cake but we don’t use fondant,” she said. “I do a lot of animal cakes, too. A lot of younger kids like having animal or character-themed birthday parties, so they want their cake to match.”
Osborn said she also gets her share of odd-themed cake requests, too. “Believe it or not, I think my oddest request is someone wanting a photo of Ramen Noodles on their cake,” she said. “And I have gotten it a lot, probably more than you know!”
Osborn, a single mom, said she works at the Walmart bakery Monday through Friday and when not working, she enjoys spending time with her kids.
“I like doing fun things with my youngest daughter, Athena, who is 3, while she is young and still enjoys spending time with me,” she said. “It seems like the older they get, the less you see of them (the kids) and the more they want to be with their friends.”
“Athena keeps me active. She enjoys playing with her dog and hide and seek. Of course, I love being outside, so anything outdoors is fun to us, especially swimming,” she said.
Osborn said even though the temperatures are getting hotter, she will continue to do her baking during the summer months.
