The season came to a close for the Sallisaw Biscuits as they dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the Poteau Oklahoma A’s in the loser’s bracket quarterfinal of the 2023 OK Kids Age 10-and-Younger Sallisaw Regional Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Sallisaw Sports Complex.
The Biscuits were three outs away from advancing to Friday night’s loser’s-bracket semifinal, but the A’s scored twice in the home half of the fifth and final inning, with the final run scoring with two outs when the batter laid down a bunt with the bases loaded and the catcher got the ball. However, the umpire ruled that the A’s baserunner scored before the catcher got possession of the ball and stepped on home plate for the force out — which would have been the final out and sent the game into extra innings tied at 3.
After the A’s scored first in the top of the opening inning, the Biscuits came back with two runs in their half of of the frame on an RBI triple by Keelan St. John and an RBI single by Tripp Casebolt for a 2-1 lead.
Tristyn Villanueva’s two-out, third-inning RBI single upped Sallisaw’s advantage to 3-1, setting the stage for the Poteau team’s comeback as the A’s scored once in the third inning and twice in the fifth for the walk-off victory.
In defeat, Tayson Ruiner was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while St. John was 2-for-2 with an RBI triple and a run scored for the Biscuits.
St. John was the hard-luck loser, despite pitching 4.2 innings with four strikeouts.
