Memory bricks, T-shirts being sold by OSHSA

By Amie Cato-Remer Editor

The Old Sallisaw High School Association (OSHSA) is currently taking orders for memory bricks and T-shirts as part of a fundraising endeavor for the organization.

The Old Sallisaw High School Association (OSHSA) is currently taking orders for memory bricks and T-shirts as part of a fundraising endeavor for the organization.

OSHSA President Laura Barnes said all donations will go toward the upkeep and improvements made to the property where the rotunda sits. The rotunda is all that remains of the old Sallisaw High School following a fire by an arsonist in 2004.

Barnes said a group consisting of alumni and other volunteers sifted through the ashes, recovering the original bricks from the rubble. The bricks were hand cleaned, chiseled and used to restore the masonry of the rotunda. Some of the bricks, containing names of former students which have been used for the sidewalk, leads to the rotunda.

She said bricks are available for purchase as follows:

• 4×8, $60 each, 13 spaces per line, up to three lines

• 8×8, $100 each, 13 spaces per line, up to three lines

• 12×12, Option 1, $125 no graphic, 20 spaces per line, up to four lines

• 12×12, Option 2, $135 with graphic, 20 spaces per line, up to two lines Barnes said memory pavers would be displayed in the sidewalk of the Old Sallisaw High School Park.

OSHSA is also selling Sallisaw High School Alumni soft-style gray T-shirts for $18 each. They come in sizes medium through 4XL and can be picked up at the group’s regular meetings, which are held the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Black Diamond Event Center. Barnes said they can be shipped for $10 extra.

“You can cash app payment to $OSHSA2015, or for more information or to give me a mailing address, just contact me,” Barnes said.

“We did two different T-shirt designs. One represents the old and the other, the new. We’re hoping to initiate younger students to buy them as well.”

Barnes said their next fundraiser will be an indoor rummage sale, which is scheduled for August 4 and 5, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Black Diamond Event Center, located at 220 West Creek. She said anyone wishing to donate items for the sale can contact her at 918-5718752.

She said to check the Old Sallisaw High School Park & OSHSA Black Diamond Event Center Facebook page for more upcoming events. There are also forms posted there for ordering bricks.

“Thank you for your continued support of our efforts to keep our school memories alive,” she concluded.
