Meet Carla, a beautiful young lab mix that is up to date on shots, is spayed and well-socialized with other dogs. She currently enjoys playing in a pen with eight other dogs where she gets along great!

Sallisaw Animal Care Facility

The Sallisaw Animal Care Facility is overcrowded with unwanted pets that have either have been left, dumped or surrendered by their owners.

Sallisaw Animal Control Officer Vickie Wyman said there are currently 26 dogs in 14 kennels at the facility which doesn’t leave much room for anything else.

Your TIMES is hoping by featuring these pets as part of a community service, that others will take action and give these dogs loving homes of their very own.

“Many cats and dogs are lost, stolen or abandoned on a daily basis. We are here to provide the public with an opportunity to visit our facility and hopefully recover their lost or stolen pets,” Wyman said.

Shelters require year-round assistance and adoption is a big part of the process. Since animals come in on a daily basis, shelters must work to ensure the animal’s health and well-being so they can be adopted to their forever home.

“You may even be the person who gives our strays a second chance and a happy ending. We keep our Facebook page updated with current photos of animals found in our area. If you are missing an animal or recovered an animal, please feel free to inbox us with a photo,” she said.

One success story the facility shares involves a female dog named Cindy.

“Cindy had been at the shelter for 625 days,” Wyman said. “Last week, she found her forever home and went to live with a loving couple, who also took a second dog and a friend of Cindy’s that had been featured in Your TIMES, Shiloh. We never gave up on finding Cindy a home and we were so happy when they took Shiloh, too.”

Wyman said if you can’t adopt, she encourages a visit to a local shelter to consider helping in other ways.

“You can give your time by fostering or volunteering; which will help the shelter by providing the animals with exercise, companionship and socialization,” she said. “You can also donate blankets and bedding, treats and food.”

According to the ASPCA, about 4.1 million cats and dogs are adopted from shelters each year.

Your TIMES will continue to feature unwanted pets from the Sallisaw Animal Care Facility each week in our Friday issue.

For more information on adoption or to volunteer, contact Wyman at the facility at 918-790-7108.
