Planning commission approves plat, rezoning

The Sallisaw Planning Commission on Tuesday approved in an expeditious three-minute meeting a preliminary plat of the Clara Stovall Addition planned for west Sallisaw.
The proposed addition is on South Ross Road between I-40 and East 1080 Road (Lenington Road).
In presenting the plat for approval, Chris Carter, senior code inspector for the city, explained the need for commission approval on a one-acre tract.
“Clara Ellen Stovall is going to have a house built by Cherokee Nation, so by ordinance, she has to have it platted if it’s less than 10 acres, so that’s her intent is to build a home on this piece of property,” Carter told the commission. “Also, we did get extra right of way for the road, and we also got any other easements that we’re needing.”
Keith Miller, building development director for the city, then elaborated.
“Cherokee Nation has a minimum requirement of one acre, so that’s why this plat is done the way it is, so that it’s a minimum of one acre,” Miller said. “She actually has more property than that, but they only require the one to meet the requirement.
“Along with that as well, that’s why it requires the next item, which is the rezoning. Otherwise, if it was three acres or more, it could have remained agriculture,” he previewed.
The planning commissioners also approved a request by Osburn Land Surveyors to rezone the Stovall property from agricultural (A-1) to onefamily residential (R-1) so that a single family housing unit can be built.
The planning commission will recommend final approval of the plat and the rezoning to the city commissioners for their Aug. 14 meeting.
