The Sallisaw Board of Education convened for a special meeting on July 21, at 6 p.m. in the Board Room of the Administration Building. The meeting, chaired by President Amanda Hatcher, addressed several important matters concerning the upcoming 2023-24 school year.

At the outset, the board members present were acknowledged, including Hatcher, Bobby Qualls (clerk), Frank Sullivan III (deputy clerk), and Tami Martin (member). The district’s administration, including Superintendent Steve Barrett and Assistant Superintendent Brad Jackson, were also in attendance.

The meeting commenced without any public comments, and the board moved forward with its agenda promptly.

One of the key issues addressed during the meeting was the approval of amendments to the Sallisaw High School handbook for the 2023-24 academic year. The motion passed with unanimous support from all board members.

The board reviewed and granted approval for United Faith to utilize the middle school gym for their ‘Back to School Bash’ event on August 13, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Another significant decision involved the approval of the Fiscal Year 24 Certified Teacher Salary Scale. The board unanimously voted in favor of its approval.

The board also addressed personnel matters, accepting the resignation of Jeannie Reinhart, who served as the Liberty Elementary SPED teacher.

Subsequently, they moved to approve the employment of various individuals for the 2023-24 school year. Hunter Dotson was appointed as a middle school history teacher and assistant girls basketball coach on a temporary contract. Virginia Jones was hired as an art/choir/Academic Team teacher under the same terms.

Jessica Osorto secured the position of Sallisaw High School assistant band director and Kylie Rutherford was appointed as the high school library media specialist. All these employments were confirmed by unanimous board approval.

Additionally, the board approved the encumbrances for fund 21 PO #7. During the meeting, an executive session was also held, beginning at 6:06 p.m. The board later emerged with no votes or minutes taken during the closed-door meeting.

This news story is based on the unofficial minutes from the board meeting and could be in error if the minutes are changed prior to adoption.
