By Billie Anthony

Monday was a day of celebration for TOPS CLUB 0737. We had our annual Installation of Officers with a luncheon at Aromas in Sallisaw. We first weighed in at First Christian Church and then went to Aromas Coffee Shop. We had ten members weigh in plus one visitor. We had eight members loss weight with a loss of 13.4 pounds and a net loss of 11.2 pounds. Billie had the best weight loss of 4.1 pounds.

When the ladies arrived at Aromas, Billie with a couple helpers had the room decorated for installation. TOPS CLUB is celebrating 75 years since Founder Esther Manz began her first weight loss meeting in her home. It was January 1948 when Esther Manz founded the group Taking Off Pounds Sensibly, after gathering with a small group of friends and consulting with her doctor about her idea. Esther’s thought was, meeting with other dieters for mutual encouragement would help people support each other to thinner figures and better health. The group catapulted to success. It grew from a kitchen table in Milwaukee to 2500 members across the Midwest by 1952, expanded into Canada in 1955. TOPS remains that same organization it started as: All about support, accountability, lasting friendships and connections and plentiful resources. Esther always resisted making TOPS commercial. She was proud of its grassroots start, and even today, that legacy remains—TOPS is still a nonprofit organization.

After the program, Jim (Billie’s husband), carried out the Installation of Officers. Officers are: Leader Billie; Co-Leader Annette; Secretary/Treasurer Doris; Weight Recorder Donna; Assistant Weight Recorder Virginia; Historian Phyllis and Sunshine Lady Mary. Each member of our chapter plays a crucial part in making this whole process successful. As a member of this chapter, we are encouraged to grow in knowledge and the determination to reach our weight-loss goals.

We closed our meeting with the TOPS Pledge.

EVERYONE is invited to visit. The FIRST VISIT is FREE. It cost $49 a year to join TOPS Club INC. We meet at First Christian Church, 706 N Wheeler, Sallisaw, Monday at 10:30am-12pm. We begin weighing at 10:30am and the meeting starts at 11am and ends at 12. For more info, please call Billie at 918/413-1383. We look forward to meeting you.
