My relationship with air conditioning
These past few months have been scorchers. I know that’s nothing new in our neck of the woods but I can’t think of anyone who actually enjoys extreme heat. It’s too hot to do anything.

Around mid-July, the fan stopped working on my vehicle’s air conditioner. There was no notice, I just got in the vehicle one day and it wouldn’t come on. It was blowing in the back, but not hard enough to bring me any relief in the front seat. I improvised by opening the sunroof and all four windows to enjoy a breeze of 100-degree air. Needless to say, it wasn’t refreshing, and by the time I arrived home, my hair was going in so many directions that I looked like Mufasa from “The Lion King.”
My “vehicle maintenance team” replaced the fan a few days later, and all was right with the world again. That is until it went out a few days later. Apparently, there is a fan that blows the first fan, so $80 later, the second fan was on and blowing so the first one would work. I hope you’re keeping up.
The vehicle’s air conditioning went out again about a week later. The wiring had “allegedly” come loose, but a few good punches to the dash got it back up and going. Talk about relief (and my mechanical skills).
Days later, my 220 air conditioner started blowing warm air in my living room, so I called my brother Clinton Cato, owner of Tenkiller Heat & Air. His diagnosis was the compressor, so there went that air conditioner, too. Thank goodness I have a small 110 unit in my bedroom window or I would’ve baked.
That weekend, I found an 8,000 BTU window unit for $160 and purchased it. Once I got home, I was on my own. I carried the unit from the vehicle to the kitchen window and was able to get it in fairly easy. However, when I let go, I realized my back was out and I couldn’t turn around. Somehow I managed to slowly make my way back into the house and stretched out. I was thankful that I at least had air conditioning.
Then last Saturday, we finally received some much-needed rain, and the temp dropped just enough to make it almost too cool inside my house. Notice that I said “almost” too cool. Did I turn the air conditioning up? Lord no! I put on some sweats and covered up with a blanket hoping to keep the temp below 70 degrees! I decided that if I got too cold, I’d just put on more layers.
