Bulldogs to get lone preseason tune-up in home scrimmage vs. Panama

The Muldrow Bulldogs football team will get its one and only preseason tune-up for the 2023 regular season tonight when they entertain the Panama Razorbacks at 6 tonight at Marty Rogers Field.

“First and foremost, we want our kids to go out there and see them compete against somebody else,” new Muldrow coach Logan Coatney said. “They’ve been hitting on and prepping with each other (in practice). One thing I need to see from them is maximum effort on the football field. We’ve got some new faces and new names in different positions. I want to see them go out there and execute their assignments. I think we’ve got a good grasp on what we’re doing offensively and defensively. The biggest thing we’re looking for is the kids to execute their assignments and play fast.”

Since tonight’s scrimmage is the only preseason opportunity to get things ironed out before the annual rivalry game against the Roland Rangers at 7 p.m. Thursday night in Roland, Coatney also is hoping tonight’s scrimmages will get some questions answered.

“I think we still have a handful of positions where we really got multiple kids who can play that spot for us,” he said. “I think we need to finalize a couple of answers per positions. As a staff, we have an idea what we think it should be, but seeing them in action against somebody else will either solidify what we’re thinking — or maybe we’ll end up putting somebody else’s name up there.”

The ‘Dogs are ready for some game-like action for the first time this preseason.

“Our kids are excited for this scrimmage because it’s the opportunity to go compete against another team,” Coatney said. “It’s kind of that first opening to get those jitters and everything else out of our system, but at the end of the day it’s just football. It’s the same game they’ve been playing since they were in youth league. The verbiage, technology and schemes are different than what they started (their football careers) with. It’s still 11 on 11. It’s still run and tackle. We’re excited to get the season started.”
