FALL PREVIEW

Vian Lady Wolverines a veteran squad with depth for fall campaign

By BY DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Vian Lady Wolverines were 1420 in the 2022 fast-pitch softball season, but saw their season end on a down note by being swept in the Class 3A District Tournament.

The Vian Lady Wolverines were 1420 in the 2022 fast-pitch softball season, but saw their season end on a down note by being swept in the Class 3A District Tournament.

A new season brings a new coach for the ladies in purple and gold as boys basketball coach John Mays is taking over the Albis Ramos, who is now an assistant coach at Roland.

A far better season is expected this fall as the Lady Wolverines return just about everyone from a season ago. Seniors back are catcher Maisie Wells, centerfielder Skyelar Locust, infielder/ pitcher LaKaila Drew and first baseman Akeelah Truett.

Returning juniors are pitcher Kala Gibbins and infielder/outfielder Rebel Simon, while outfielder/pitcher Hanna Mattingly, infielder/outfielder Halli Russell, infielder Rayleigh Terrill and utility players Ayden Crittenden, Tressa Sandlin, Scarlett Fields and Carmen Rautenberg round out the sophomores.

Freshmen on the squad are Tina Rautenberg, Kaidence Roark, Cassidee Postoak, Sidney Cox, Eden Girty and Eden Gilbert.

“We return eight starters from last year, so we have lots of experience,” Mays said. “We have a pitcher (Gibbins) that has started the last two years. I expect us to have a good season and compete.”
