DIAMOND NOTES

Last week was quite a week for Vian Lady Wolverines; Mother Nature affecting games this week

It took two weeks into the season, but we finally had one of our eight local softball teams have a perfect week.

It took two weeks into the season, but we finally had one of our eight local softball teams have a perfect week.

The Vian Lady Wolverines went 5-0 last week. They started last week with a pair of road wins Aug. 14, 15-4 over host Heavener and 10-2 over Cameron.

Then, Vian got a pair of walk-off victories, Aug. 15 with a 3-2 win over Spiro and 4-2 over Eufaula on Thursday.

The week was capped with an 11-0 road win Friday afternoon over the Central Lady Tigers.

I thought it ironic that it was Central coach Wes Green who told me when I came out earlier this month for his team’s photograph day that he thought the best softball team in the county was the Vian Lady Wolverines, who ended the week by blanking Green’s Lady Tigers on Friday.

Mother Nature is once again playing havoc with the local fast-pitch softball schedule.

After rain caused several Week 1 cancelations Aug. 7-12, most of this week’s games are being altered by having them either canceled or moved to night games.

Check out our website for the latest.

Speaking of the Vian Lady Wolverines, they are the only team playing in a tournament this week as they will participate in the Lincoln Christian Tournament, which will begin Thursday and end Saturday in Tulsa.

Week 2 individual hitting highlights

• Vian’s Maisie Wells enjoyed a 6-for-9 Aug. 14 afternoon in the road three-way at Heavener with Cameron as she had a home run, four runs batted in and four runs scored.

• Vian’s Kala Gibbins and Hanna Mattingly each walked off games with home runs last week. Gibbins’ solo shot doomed Spiro 3-2 on Aug. 15, while Mattingly’s two-run dinger broke a 2-all tie Thursday afternoon against Eufaula for a 4-2 win.

• Muldrow’s Kaydence Young hit a big two-run homer Thursday afternoon to help the Lady Bulldogs down county and district rival Sallisaw 8-3 Thursday afternoon in Sallisaw.

• Gans’ Brianna Burris had a perfect 4-for-4 game Aug. 15 against Gore, featuring two doubles, four runs batted in and three runs scored.

• Gore’s Sophie O’Connor hit a tworun, inside-the-park home run in that same Aug. 15 contest against Gans.

• Gore’s Emily Daily went 7-for-9 in four games in last weekend’s Okmulgee Tournament, including a double, two triples, three runs batted in and three runs scored.

Week 2 individual pitching highlights

• Vian’s Kala Gibbins had 20 strikeouts last week, with half of those (10) coming in Thursday’s win over Central.

• Muldrow’s Kaydence Young fanned eight Keota Lady Lions in the Lady Bulldogs’ win Aug. 14.

• Roland’s Emily Daws got five Ks in her team’s Thursday afternoon road win over Central.
