The Gore Pirates scored three varsity touchdowns in their lone preseason scrimmage of the 2023 season against Heavener on Friday night at home.
Tate Brooksher hit Journey Shells on two touchdown passes, while Hunter McGee scored the other TD on a 70-yard scamper.
“It was a great scrimmage,” said Gore coach Brandon Ellis, who is beginning his second stint coaching the Pirates. “We had 158 plays. I thought we were physical. It felt more like a game, and I think we and Heavener each got something out of it. We came out healthy.”
On the other hand, Friday night’s home scrimmage showed areas where the Pirates need to work on to get ready for the 2023 season opener.
“We know the mistakes are,” Ellis said. “They are correctable. We’ll work on them this week. We just need to come out ready to play.”
The Pirates will open their 2023 season at 8 p.m. Friday against the Wilburton Diggers at home.
