Wolverines get final tune-up for regular season

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Vian Wolverines got their one and only preseason tune-up for the regular season as they were part of a three-way scrimmage with Checotah against host Sequoyah-Tahlequah on Thursday night at Northeastern State University.

The Vian Wolverines got their one and only preseason tune-up for the regular season as they were part of a three-way scrimmage with Checotah against host Sequoyah-Tahlequah on Thursday night at Northeastern State University.

The scrimmage had to be moved from Friday night at Sequoyah High School to Thursday at NSU due to Sequoyah’s field still being renovated.

The Wolverines scored once on the night — a 65-yard run by Draighton Fletcher against Sequoyah-Tahlequah. The Wolverines and the Wildcats scrimmaged to a scoreless tie.

“Our defense played pretty well,” Vian coach Gary Willis said. “Our run game was good. Our punting was really good, but our passing game needs to improve. We have to work on that.”

The Wolverines will open the season at 7 p.m. Friday in a road game against the defending Class 2A state champion Washington Warriors.
