SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 4-0 win on the road against Big West Conference preseason favorite California-Santa Barbara on Friday evening.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 4-0 win on the road against Big West Conference preseason favorite California-Santa Barbara on Friday evening.

The Golden Eagles (1-0) went on the offensive attack scoring four goals in Friday’s match. In the 30th minute, sophomore Juan Moreno scored from eight yards out on a pass from Joel Quashie. Moreno’s goal was his first of the season and he connected past the keeper from right to left. Ultimately, his goal was the game winner.

ORU led 1-0 at the break, outshooting UCSB 8-5.

In the 62nd minute newcomer Luis Flores made it a 2-0 game with a rocket free kick just outside the penalty area sending the ball past the defensive wall and into the right side of the net. His goal was unassisted.

Four minutes later, Felipe Medina made it a 3-0 match. Moreno stole the ball and dribbled through defenders into the penalty area before he passed it to Medina who connected with the upper left part of the net.

Reed Berry got in on the scoring fun when he made it a 4-0 match in the 77th minute. Berry split defenders as Haruki Yamazaki sent the ball forward to him. He then dribbled while keeping defenders behind him before taking a shot on goal right over the goalkeeper’s hands and in to the upper left part of the net.

ORU was slated to make the trip Tuesday to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to face Cal Poly at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Oral Roberts University midfielder Juan Moreno secured the opening TicketSmarter Summit League Men’s Soccer Offensive Peak Performer of the Week award, league officials announced Monday.

Moreno tallied the first threepoint game of his career as ORU opened the campaign with a decisive 4-0 victory over California-Santa Barbara. Moreno scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 30th minute to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead at the break.

He added his first career assist on ORU’s third goal of the match to help the Golden Eagles rout the Big West Conference’s preseason favorite.
