SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team came back to defeat the Cal Poly Mustangs 5-3 on Monday evening to move to 2-0 on the season.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team came back to defeat the Cal Poly Mustangs 5-3 on Monday evening to move to 2-0 on the season.

Both teams came out of the gate hot to start the game. Combined both teams scored three goals in the first 2:25 of Monday’s match. Cal Poly struck first with a penalty goal by Nathan Colley just 45 seconds in the game to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. Thiago Patto then tied the match at 1-all just 45 seconds later on a free kick that hit the bottom left of the net.

Cal Poly would then take a 3-1 lead in the first half on a goal by Jackson Miller in the third minute and Jackson Kestler in the 13th minute.

It would only take ORU 15 seconds to respond with a goal to make it a 3-2 game. Patto took a shot on goal that was deflected out by the keeper and put back into the net by Reed Berry for his second goal of the season.

Three minutes later, Luis Flores tied the game at 3-all with his first goal of the night in the 17th minute. Flores took a deflected ball from the goalkeeper and dribbled to the center of the net and scored for his second goal of the season. The teams then went into halftime tied as the Golden Eagles outshot the Mustangs 11-3.

Flores captured his second goal of the night and third of the season in the 47th minute to lift ORU up 4-3. As the Mustang defense tried to clear the ball, Juan Moreno deflected it to Flores who sent it past the keeper from four yards out to the left. Flores’ goal was the game winner.

In the 67th minute, Giovanni Herrera scored his first goal of the season and gave ORU a 5-3 advantage when he came in blazing on the left side behind the defenders and received a rocket pass from Damani Harris and sent it in to the goal. Harris was credited with the assist.

ORU will entertain crosstown rival No. 16 Tulsa at 7 tonight at the Case Soccer Complex.
