GRIDIRON NOTES

Shelby is area’s top rusher, passer, scorer

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

Welcome to Gridiron Notes, the weekly column that looks back at some of the highlights from the previous week on the high school gridiron ... with a possible sneak peak at upcoming games.

I would like to welcome you to Gridiron Notes.

I know you all are saying to yourselves, “What is this about?”

This weekly column that will publish in each Friday edition will take a look back at some of the highlights of the previous week of action on the gridiron, and possibly even take a sneak peak about that night’s games.

It also makes special recognition of all the local 100-yard rushers, 100yard passers and 100-yard receivers along with anyone who scored 12 points or more and a defensive honor roll showing some of the top defensive performances.

Of course, I have to get the teams’ statistics by 10 a.m. Thursdays to be able to be a part of this column. So, if you don’t see someone from the team you follow, quite likely that is the reason. For the record, we have a couple of teams in that boat.

Coaches, I need to make sure I get your offensive and defensive statistics either put on your MaxPreps website wall or emailed to me at davids@cookson.news by no later than 10 a.m. Thursdays to be able to give your player(s) some special recognition.

Zero week almost saw the Sallisaw Black Diamonds snap their 16-game losing streak, taking a 34-27 lead with 7:24 left in the game against Stigler last Friday night at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium, but a late Stigler score spoiled both the comeback win and the debut of Brandon Tyler as coach.

On Aug. 24, the latest installment of the “Battle of 64” took place, with the homesteading Roland Rangers prevailing 21-14 over the Muldrow Bulldogs in a game that was thrilling from opening kickoff to final buzzer.

Three local quarterbacks, Sallisaw’s Brock Streun, Gans’ Hunter Walters and Webbers Falls’ Maddux Shelby, returned to the gridiron after suffering injuries last season. Streun did not play last season due to a back injury, but came in to replace an injured teammate and scored four rushing touchdowns in the second-half Sallisaw rally that almost got the Black Diamonds a win.

Walters missed the first half of the season with a wrist injury, so he didn’t get to start the season as the Grizzlies’ QB. That changed last Friday night, and Gans almost rallied for a road victory against Oaks, which won the game 3028.

Shelby missed the last half of the 2022 season with a torn quad muscle in the District B-5 opener and had to sit out the rest of the season, including an opening-round Class B playoff loss to Keota. Fast forward to Aug. 25. Shelby not only got to see his first action since the middle of last season, he also led the Warriors to avenging that playoff loss to the Lions with a 42-28 home win last Friday night at Smokey Cox Stadium.
