DALLAS — The No. 25 Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season at No. 11 Southern Methodist University on Monday evening, losing 1-0.
Despite out-shooting SMU and having more total shots on goal, ORU could not connect with the back of the net in the second top 25 match-up in four days for the team. SMU broke through and scored in the 45th minute with an unassisted goal by Jose Ortiz.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Mustangs 7-4 in the second half and had two shots on goal. In the 52nd minute, Reed Berry sent a shot on goal that was saved and in 58th minute, Thiago Patto sent a shot that was also saved by SMU’s keeper.
In the final two minutes, Vitor Turnes and Patto each sent in a shot to try and tie the match, but both missed just high.
ORU will continue its road trip in Texas with a match at Houston Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday in Houston.
