PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Maddison Hinson-Tolchard sank 11 birdies and an eagle on hole six last week as the Oklahoma State women’s golf team finished sixth at the Carmel Cup.
Hinson-Tolchard carded weekend rounds of 68 and 70 to tie for ninth at 4-under par at the esteemed Pebble Beach Golf Links, improving upon her 1-under score tallied in last year’s tournament.
While Hinson-Tolchard added her 14th career top-10 finish, four Cowgirls made their Carmel Cup debuts this week, including two making their collegiate debuts at the PGA mainstay.
“This was a great experience for us to get the chance to play at Pebble Beach for the last four straight days,” OSU coach Greg Robertson said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better way to open up the new year.”
The Carmel Cup saw each team field six starters while counting the top five individual scores. In the format, Stanford led the field finishing 22-under to claim the tournament.
For OSU, Clemence Martin drilled a clutch birdie on hole No. 18 to close the tournament strong with a 1-under 71. Martin capped off the tournament 3-over par to finish play tied for 22nd.
Making her Cowgirl debut, Ellie Bushnell impressed more-and-more as the week progressed. After a round-one score of 78, the freshman rose to a 2-over 74 effort on Saturday and closed the tournament 1-under 71.
The sixth hole marked magic for Bushnell and Hinson-Tolchard, each sinking an eagle on the par-5 Saturday. However, the three-stroke showcase didn’t end there, as — in her debut — Marta Silchenko joined the party with one of her own.
Silchenko wasted no time in her debut, leading the team in round one even with par. To bode with an octet of birdies, she also led the team with a pair of eagles, capped by a two-stroke conversion on hole No. 9.
Thitaporn Saithip shot in the 70s all three days of the Carmel Cup, finishing the tournament tied for 40th, while Angelica Pfefferkorn capped off play in 44th.
“We learned a lot this week as a team and found out that we have quite a bit to work on as we move forward in the season,” Robertson said. “We have a couple of weeks to correct some things to be ready for the next tournament.”
The Cowgirls return to action Sept. 23 as they head to Norman in the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club.
