SAMMAMISH, Wash. — Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team opened its fall slate with an eighth-place finish at the Sahalee Players Championship on Sunday after finishing at 886 at Sahalee Country Club.

The Cowboys entered the day tied for third place before closing with a 19-over 307 during their final round at the par-72, 7,003-yard layout. Illinois finished as the lone team under par at 1-under 863 to win the event by eight shots.

Competing individually, OSU’s fifth-year golfer Rayhan Thomas closed with a 73 to finish at 2-over 218 and tied for seventh place.

Gaven Lane capped his Cowboy debut with a top 10 as well. The freshman finished with a 77 to come in at 3-over 219 and tied for 10th place to lead the OSU starting five.

A pair of Cowboys finished a stroke back at 220 and tied for 14th place. Freshman Johnnie Clark closed with his low round of the event, a 71, to finish at 4-over, while senior Jonas Baumgartner carded a 76 to get to his 220 total.

After going out with a 38 on his front side that included three bogeys and a birdie, Clark notched a birdie at the 10th and an eagle at the 11th. He would offset a double bogey at the 12th with birdies at the 15th and 18th to finish under par for the day.

Fifth-year golf Hazen Newman closed with an 84 to finish at 230 and tied for 50th place, while freshman Preston Stout posted an 83 to finish tied for 56th place at 232.

The Cowboys will be back in action on Friday when they begin play at the Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill.
