With the setback, the Cowgirls fell to 6-2-0 on the season, while SMU improved to 4-2-0.
Statistically, the match played out evenly, with SMU owning a slight edge in shots at 12-9 and corner kicks at 4-3. Grace Gordon made a pair of saves for OSU, while SMU keeper Samantha Estrada tallied four.
SMU netted the game’s lone goal in the 15th minute when Eliana Salama delivered a ball into the box that a sliding Peyton Annen sent just past Gordon to put the home team on top.
The Cowgirls battled for the equalizer in the second half, putting three shots on frame. In the 74th minute, Hannah Chance had a shot from 10 yards out saved. In the 81st minute, Xcaret Pineda’s attempt off a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box was also denied.
Saturday’s match marked the first time this season OSU has been shut out, and the Cowgirls are now 2-2-0 on the road in 2023.
Up next, OSU opens Big 12 Conference play at 5 p.m. Thursday at Iowa State.
