The former residence of the late Julie Ferguson at 1703 Edmondson in Sallisaw caught fire just before 8 p.m. Saturday evening, leaving smoke and water damage.
Sallisaw Fire Chief Anthony Armstrong said the new owners had all their belongings stored in the garages, and were sleeping on mattresses on the floor while they were working on painting the home and replacing flooring.
“The double garage was a total lost and they lost most of their belongings,” Armstrong said. He noted a passerby called in the fire to authorities, and the Central Fire Department assisted the Sallisaw Fire Department with the fire.
“It’s still under investigation but there is nothing suspicious,” Armstrong said. “There were previous electrical problems that the investigator is checking out to see if that was the cause. The house did sustain smoke and water damage, and anytime that happens, it’s never good.”
“The fire penetrated a back room and charred the rafters on the back side of the house,” Armstrong said, “but the family, including their pets, were unharmed.”
Armstrong said the family was connected with Red Cross for immediate help with clothing, lodging and any other needs.
