Lady Diamonds drop home district games to Stigler, Fort Gibson

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds suffered a pair of home district losses.

The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds suffered a pair of home district losses.

The Lady Diamonds lost 11-1 to Stigler on Monday afternoon after dropping their Thursday afternoon home district game to the visiting Fort Gibson Lady Tigers by a score of 17-2.

The two district home games were the first games for the Lady Diamonds since they lost 8-4 in their Aug. 24 road game against Westville.

In Monday’s loss to Stigler, the Lady Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lady Diamonds (112 overall, 0-9 in district play) cut their deficit in half as Makenna Bormann scored on a Stigler error to make it 2-1.

Unfortunately, that was as close as Sallisaw got as Stigler scored once in the third inning, six runs in the fourth inning — that was highlighted by a three-run home run by Payton Mecum — and twice in the fifth inning to put the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Emma Lessley doubled, while Sydney Weedon and Jaycie Cox singled for Sallisaw. Preslee Jackson took the loss.

In Thursday’s loss to Fort Gibson, the Lady Black Diamonds fell behind 6-0 in the first inning, but they dented the scoreboard when Weedon tripled and scored on an error to put Sallisaw behind 6-1 after an inning.

After Fort Gibson upped its advantage to 8-1 after two innings, Sallisaw scored its final run on an RBI groundout by Lessley, scoring Weedon, to cut the deficit to 8-2 after three innings. However, that was as close as the Lady Diamonds got.

The Lady Tigers put the game into run-rule status with a nine-run fourth inning.

In defeat, Weedon was 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and two runs scored, while Bormann, Channing Wilson and Delaney Compton all singled for Sallisaw.

Compton took the loss, going the first three-plus innings. Jackson finished the game, recording a strikeout.
