STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State Cowboys looked to finish up the non-conference schedule and head into Big 12 Conference play undefeated Saturday night in the friendly confines of Boone Pickens Stadium.
However, the South Alabama Jaguars had other plans.
Jumping out to an early 23-0 lead and holding the OSU offense to just 70 first-half yards of offense proved to be too much to overcome as the Cowboys fell 33-7.
The Jaguars had 395 total yards, 243 of them on the ground, and four total touchdowns.
The Cowboys racked up only 208 yards and a single TD. OSU turned the ball over twice, while South Alabama had no turnovers.
OSU coach Mike Gundy used three quarterbacks again in the game, with Alan Bowman and Gunnar Gundy getting most of the work, and Garret Rangel finishing up the fourth quarter for the Cowboys.
Gundy had the best night of the three, going 9 of 18 for 64 yards. Bowman went 6 of 12 for 42 yards and an interception. Rangel was 1 of 5 for eight yards in limited time.
The Cowboy rushing attack was led by Elijah Collins with nine carries for 31 yards. Gundy added 27 yards on 10 carries, and Jaden Nixon ran for 23 yards on five carries with the lone touchdown.
The receiving corps was led by Jaden Bray, who caught five passes for 42 yards, and Josiah Johnson pulled in a couple of balls for 25 yards.
South Alabama quarterback Carter Bradley went 10 of 16 passing with 152 yards and two TDs. La’Damian Webb carried the ball 18 times for a game-high 151 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Caullin Lacy led the Jaguars with five catches for 104 yards and two TDs.
The Cowboys (2-1) look to regroup as they begin Big 12 play Saturday afternoon facing off against the Iowa State Cyclones (1-2), who were stunned on the road by the host Ohio Bobcats of the Mid-American Conference by a score of 10-7. Saturday’s kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa.
