Members learn about calcium

By Billie Anthony

Today we had 11 ladies weigh in. We had a net loss of 2.3 pounds and Brenda had the best weight loss of 2.4 pounds. Our chapter challenge is to 48 ounces of water this coming week. Our Two Bit Bowl winner was Virginia. We started the Ladder contest this week. Seven ladies clothes pins were placed on the first rung of the ladder. Seven ribbons were removed from the Surprise Box. We celebrated with Mary her first 10.4 pounds loss since the first of the year. Great job, Mary! I had the privilege to give Mary a certificate, charm bracelet and charm for her weight loss.

The program today was “Bone Up on Calcium.” Also read the article from the Sequoyah County Times by Janis Risley about Slightly Salty. Bone health is an important issue that should not be ignored. As we age, our bones remodel. Over time bone loss can occur, which may result in an increased risk for fractures. Weak bones or osteopenia is a pre-condition to brittle bones or osteoporosis. Learning about bone health and what you can do to prevent bone loss is an important first step in prevention. Certain risk factors cause accelerated bone loss. Some of these factors are controlled and some are not within our control. These factors include: Calcium intake, Vitamin D intake, Diet, Smoking, Medications, Gender, Age, Race, Family history/ genetics, Estrogen, High-protein diets, Alcoholism, Medical conditions, Dieting and yo-yo weight loss, Exercise and weight-bearing activity.

We closed our meeting with the TOPS Pledge.

EVERYONE is invited to visit. The FIRST VISIT is FREE. It cost $49 a year to join TOPS Club INC. We meet at First Christian Church, 706 N Wheeler, Sallisaw, Monday at 10:30 a.m. to noon. We begin weighing at 10:30 a.m. and the meeting starts at 11 a.m. and ends at noon. For more info, please call Billie at 918-413-1383. We look forward to meeting you.
