Lady Wolverines win Class 3A Regional Tournament, heading to Super Regional

TULSA — The Vian Lady Wolverines softball team took the first step on its way to next month’s Class 3A State Tournament as the Lady Wolverines won the Class 3A Regional Tournament on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-5 win over the regional-host Lincoln Christian Lady Bulldogs.

TULSA — The Vian Lady Wolverines softball team took the first step on its way to next month’s Class 3A State Tournament as the Lady Wolverines won the Class 3A Regional Tournament on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-5 win over the regional-host Lincoln Christian Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Wolverines were in the driver’s seat after Day 1 on Tuesday, beating regional-host Lincoln Christian 9-2 after routing Atoka 17-4.

The Lady Wolverines (23-7) will find out their match-up and site for next week’s Class 3A Super Regional Tournament (formerly known as the regional tournament) by Monday.

In the regional championship game, the Lady Wolverines had to rally from a 4-0 first-inning deficit and a 5-3 thirdinning deficit to get the win as Vian scored once in the fourth inning, twice in the fifth inning and once in the seventh inning to get the come-from-behind win.

For the game, LaKaila Drew was 3-for-4 with a double and a run batted in, Maisie Wells was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, Skyelar Locust was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI and Akeelah Truett doubled and scored once.

Kala Gibbins (21-6) got the win, getting five strikeouts in seven innings.

In the win over Atoka, the Lady Wolverines scored three runs in the first inning for a 3-0 lead.

After the Lady Wampus Cats cut their deficit to 3-1 after an inning, the Lady Wolverines scored twice in the second and fourth innings for a 7-1 lead. A fiverun sixth inning put the game into runrule status.

For the game, Gibbins was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and a run scored, Locust was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI, Wells was 2-for-3 with two doubles, five RBIs and two runs scored, Halli Russell was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, Hanna Mattingly doubled with two RBIs and Rebel Simon doubled two runs scored.

Gibbins got the win, striking out three batters in six innings.

In the first victory over Lincoln Christian, the Lady Wolverines scored once in the opening inning and four runs in the fourth inning for a 5-0 lead.

After Lincoln Christian scored twice in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 5-2, Vian put away the game with a four-run sixth inning.

For the game, Drew was 5-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Wells was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, Gibbins was 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, Truett was 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, Locust was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Mattingly was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored and Simon doubled.

Gibbins got the pitching victory, fanning five batters in seven innings.
