Warriors seeking 5-0 start, welcome Cave Springs Hornets to town

The Webbers Falls Warriors football team has done about all it can do to this point of the 2023 season — play four games and win them all.
“You say your schedule isn’t very tough,” Webbers Falls coach Trent Holt said. “Do you want to have a not-sotough schedule and be 5-0 or a really tough schedule and be 0-5? From where I come from, you’d rather be looking at 5-0 than 0-5. A win is a win. We’ll take them. We’re playing pretty good. We’re going to see how good we are in a couple of weeks (the District B-6 opener vs. Dewar), but I think we’re pretty good. We just don’t know yet. Taking nothing away from these other teams, we’ve just been better than they have. We’re playing well. Defensively, it doesn’t matter who you’re playing when the kid running with the ball (for the opposition) has three or four (of our) kids there trying to make a tackle, and they’re making tackles. It means you’re doing something right. Our pass coverage has been a lot better. We’re right there with a shot to breaking (the pass) up. I’m pleased with how we’re playing.”
The Warriors (4-0) will try to make it 5-0 tonight when they entertain the Cave Springs Hornets for a 7 p.m. contest at Smokey Cox Stadium, which will be the last game before a bye and the District B-6 portion of the season commences.
The Hornets (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season last week, falling 64-8 at home to Quinton after winning their first two games of 2023 — 56-8 over Midway and 52-34 over Sasakwa. Holt said there’s one Hornet who can sting you if you aren’t careful.
“Their quarterback is pretty agile,” he said. “He can throw it. I think if they try to line up and run the football at us, it’s going to be hard on them, because we’ve played that pretty well.”
Thus, keeping the Hornets’ QB from stinging the Warriors will be of the utmost importance tonight — among other things.
“The main thing is containing the quarterback,” Holt said. “We have to make sure we stay in coverage and keep containment on him. We can’t let him have a lot of yards rushing the football. When he throws it, we have to be in the right spots to cover (their wide receivers). Offensively, we have to keep doing what we’re doing. We’re playing pretty good offensively. Our offensive line still needs work. Ryan Cowan played some last week (against Oaks), and he’s getting a lot better — which helps our offensive line. He missed the second and third games (vs. Wesleyan Christian and Arkoma) with an ankle injury. It’s still bothering him, but it’s much better.”
