DIAMOND NOTES

We’re down to 3 softball teams left still playing (UPDATED with VIAN’s CLASS 3A SUPER REGIONAL SCHEDULE)

By DAVID SEELEY SPORTS EDITOR

Then, there were three — as in three local fast-pitch softball teams — still playing meaningful games.

Then, there were three — as in three local fast-pitch softball teams — still playing meaningful games.

The Sallisaw Lady Diamonds and the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs will begin postseason play today in the Class 4A Regional Tournament.

The Lady Diamonds will meet the regional-host Wagoner Lady Bulldogs at 11 a.m., followed by the Stilwell Lady Indians and the Seminole Lady Chieftains at 1 p.m. The losers will meet at 3 p.m., followed by the winners at 5 p.m. The loser’s-bracket final will be played at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the regional final at 1 p.m. and the if-game at 3 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs will meet the Dewey Lady Bulldoggers at noon in Miami, Okla., with the winner playing the regionaltournament host Miami Lady Wardogs at 2 p.m. The Muldrow-Dewey loser will then play Miami at 4 p.m. The regional final will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, with the if-game at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The Vian Lady Wolverines were pair with the host Lindsey Leopardettes for their Class 3A Super Regional, which will begin with a noon doubleheader Thursday. If the two teams split, the winner-take-all-game will be at 11 a.m. Friday. If they win the Super Regional, they will play in the Class 3A State Tournament, which will take place Oct. 5-7 at Oklahoma City’s Hall of Fame Stadium.

We are in the final week of the 2023 Major League Baseball season, with postseason play beginning next Tuesday.

As we started the day Tuesday morning, Baltimore had a 2.5-game lead over Tampa Bay in the American League East Division, while Texas had a 2.5-game lead over Houston and four-game lead over Seattle.

As for the AL Wild Card race, if the playoff would have started Tuesday, Tampa Bay, Toronto and Houston would have the three spots, with Seattle a 1.5 games behind Houston.

In the National League, Milwaukee is just about — or possibly did Tuesday night — clinch the NL Central Division title.

As for the NL Wild Card race, Philadelphia, Arizona and the Chicago Cubs currently have the three wild card spots, with Miami a game back, Cincinnati 2.5 games back and San Francisco 4.5 games back. San Diego tried to make a late-season push, but the Padres just ran out of time.

By the time next week’s Diamond Notes Column comes out, there will have been one day’s worth of MLB baseball playoffs under our belts.
