DENVER — The Oral Roberts University women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to the University of Denver in a hard-fought matchup Saturday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
The Pioneers (5-1-4 overall, 1-0-0 in Summit League play) scored the lone goal of the match in the 16th minute as Riley Baker knocked in a cross from Lily O’Grady.
Both teams remained in a back-and-fourth defensive battle for the rest of the night as the Pioneers came away with the win.
Defenders Gabrielle Abbey and Alani Chaple put up a stout defensive effort for the Golden Eagles (3-4-3, 0-1-0) by making tackles, deflecting passes and blocking shots.
Keeper Alexa Riefer made two crucial saves in the 80th and 82nd minute to give ORU an opportunity down the stretch. Each shot was aimed at the bottom right corner as Riefer dove to save them both.
The Golden Eagles return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday when they travel to meet Nebraska-Omaha.
