FORT GIBSON — The Vian Lady Wolverines got a Class 3A Super Regional Tournament tune-up road victory as they defeated the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers 7-5 Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Wolverines (257) broke a scoreless tie with a three-run second inning as Skyelar Locust’s two-run double and Kala Gibbins’ sacrifice fly made it 3-0.

After the Lady Tigers scored once in the second inning to cut the deficit to 3-1 after two innings, the Lady Wolverines got that run back in the fourth inning on LaKaila Drew’s two-out RBI single for a 4-1 lead. Fort Gibson cut its deficit to 4-3 after four innings.

After Fort Gibson tied the game at 4 after five innings, Vian took the lead for good on a one-out, two-run single by Akeelah Truett for a 6-4 lead in the sixth inning.

After the Lady Tigers cut their deficit to 6-5 after six innings, the Lady Wolverines got an insurance run on Drew’s grounder in the seventh inning.

For the game, Maisie Wells and Hanna Mattingly were each 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Gibbins (23-6) got the win, getting eight strikeouts in seven innings.

The Lady Wolverines were slated to meet the host Lindsay Leopardesses in the Class 3A Regional Tournaments. After a doubleheader was scheduled Thursday afternoon, a winner-takeall game is scheduled for 11 this morning as long as neither team swept the other on Thursday. The super-regional tournament winner will advance to the Class 3A State Tournament, which is scheduled to begin next Thursday at Oklahoma City’s Hall of Fame Stadium.
