Local schools participating in Walk & Roll to School Day

Liberty Elementary School and Eastside Elementary in Sallisaw, along with Vian Public Schools, will be participating in the National Walk & Roll to School Day.

Liberty Elementary School and Eastside Elementary in Sallisaw, along with Vian Public Schools, will be participating in the National Walk & Roll to School Day.

Liberty and Eastside’s event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 5, while Vian’s will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Isaac Barnoskie, Public Health Educator for Cherokee Nation Public Health at Redbird Smith Health Center, said those participating (including parents/guardians) in the Liberty and Eastside events are asked to meet at The Rink parking lot in Sallisaw at 7:30 a.m. The Rink is located at 128 Sioux St., near the corner of Choctaw and Sioux.

Parentsguardians must accompany children and together, they will walk/ bike from Sioux St., turn right on Fryer Dr., right on Ida Ave. and up the first drive just before the playground to the sidewalk beside the school cafeteria.

Those participating in Vian’s event are asked to meet at at 7:30 a.m. at the Simple Simon’s Pizza parking lot, located at 301 S. Thornton St.

Participants will walk/bike from Thornton Street, turn left on Vaughan St., left on Cherokee St. and then head two blocks straight to Vian Public Schools.

Regular walkers are also welcome to join in and walk with everyone, or take their regular route.

Water and healthy snacks will be provided at each event by TSET Healthy Living Program of Sequoyah County.

Staff will be present, along with sponsors of the event: City of Sallisaw, Sallisaw NOW Coalition, Cherokee Nation Public Health, People Inc., CREOKS Health Services, OSU Extension and Oklahoma State Department of Health.

Walk to School Day is coordinated by the National Center for Safe Routes to School. More information about the event can be found at https://www.walkbiketoschool.org
